How Billroth Hospital was established
With a view and dedication to render medical service particularly in the field of Gastroenterology, the disease which causes unexplainable disburance in the stomach of the patient, Dr V.Jaganathan, MS(General), MAMS., Fams-Gastro (Vienna), FICS (Gastro), FRSH (London)., FAGE., Gastroenterologist., Endoscopist and Surgeon established a Hospital on 30th November, 1990, with the name BILLROTH HOSPITAL, in memory of Founder-Gastroenterologist, Dr.Theodor Billroth, who lived in USA during the years1829-1894. Initially, this Hospital had 20 beds and was expanded to 50 beds in October, 1993.

Sri C.S.Ramachary, the illustrious chairman of Sitalakshmi group of Mills thought of bringing up a
hospital with all facilities in Madurai.The idea conceived by him was not fulfilled during his life
time.His family members Sri C.R.Rajendran and Smt Kamalam Rajendran , Industrialists and
Trustees of Sitalakshmi Charities made his dream come true. C.S.R MEMORIAL HOSPITAL
was started by them in 1978 and they dedicated it to serve the people.

- Camphor being lit on the top of persons head. The result was many suffered burn injuries transforming into septic and worm infested wounds. Children as young as 9 months old were subjected to this treatment on suspicious of having mental retardation just because the child’s head would not hold.
- Herbal extracts of an unknown origin being poured into the ears, on the suspicion of being mentally ill.

That vision was shared by Dr.S.S. Badrinath and his colleagues. From it emerged Sankara Nethralaya - the Temple of the Eye. On the auspicious day of Vinayaka Chathurthi, on 6th September 1978 Sankara Nethralaya began its relentless journey in providing world-class eye care at affordable cost. An Institution with a missionary spirit that is making a visible difference to the lives of millions of visually impaired people.
Sankara Nethralaya has been adjudged "the Best Eye Hospital in India", by a survey conducted by OUTLOOK MAGAZINE (July 2002), THE WEEK-MAGAZINE (April 2005) and more recently by a survey conducted by THE WEEK-MAGAZINE (April 2007).
